5/6/2020 - Testing...Testing... / R.I.P. Florian
It's impossible to overstate the influence that Kraftwerk had on me as a person.
I remember watching PBS in Sacramento as a little kid and hearing the opening jam of "Ruckzuck" , those insane delayed flutes, as the opening credits to Newton's Apple. (must have been some cool cats at the helm of that show)
I remember when I ended up making the connection that the music I heard as a little kid was actually Kraftwerk, and that the song ROCKS!
I remember picking up my first Kraftwerk record, the Telephone Call single, at Record Heaven in Sacto when I was in high school. (Not their best song, but gives me all kind of good nostalgia vibes)
I remember getting a tattoo of the Autobahn symbol from the album when I turned 20. I remember taking a picture of that tattoo in front of a real Autobahn sign on a trip to Europe with my folks a couple years later...
I remember dressing like Florian (and the rest of the group) from the cover of Man Machine for one of my art openings in college at UCDavis in the late 90s.
I remember seeing them at the Warfield in San Francisco in 1998, and when they opened with Numbers, I lost my mind. Tour de France was definitely a highlight of that show. And, yes indeed, they had the robots with them, and it was truly mind blowing.
No other band has the vast range of sounds that they created in their immense career, and no other band sounds as fresh every time you hear them.
Florian was always my favorite in the weird, futuristic version of the Beatles that Kraftwerk embodied. I think it was his true sense of otherness. His perfect android visage that really drew me to him. I think the thing that hit me extra hard about Florian's passing is that, at least part of me, felt that he truly was The Robot. Goes to show you that even the perfect prototype of a cyborg is still painfully human. I love you Florian... Endless Endless
